Canon Patent: 135mm f/2, 400mm f/4 and 50mm f/2.5 defocus smoothing

New Canon Patent applications filed for a set of RF mount lenses with electronically controlled Defocus Smoothing (DS).

Defocus Smoothing is a technology Canon first introduced with the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS lens. The featured Canon patent might suggest more DS lenses are on their way.

Canon patent application 2020-199390 (Japan) discusses optical formulas and methods for three prime lenses with DS:

  • 135mm f/2
  • 400mm f/4
  • 50mm f/2.5

New Canon Super Telephoto DO Lenses and EOS R1 Coming in 2022

According to recent Canon rumors, new Canon super telephoto DO lenses will arrive along with the rumored EOS R1 flagship camera.

It is expected that Canon will announce (or development announcement) the long rumored EOS R1 flagship camera and a DO super telephoto lens in 2022. The Canon EOS R1 is already in the list of Upcoming Canon Cameras 2022.

In addition, Canon is currently testing 5 DO super telephoto lenses, but only one lens will enter final mass production. From the current actual test, the RF 500mm F4.5 DO IS USM performs well.

5 DO Super Telephoto Lenses:

  • RF 400mm f/3.5 DO IS USM
  • RF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
  • RF 500mm f/4.5 DO IS USM
  • RF 500mm f/5 DO IS USM
  • RF 800mm f/9.5 DO IS USM
