Canon Patent : RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM and RF 300-800mm f/8 IS USM Lenses

Canon is planning to announce the new super-telephoto lenses in 2022. In addition to the previously reported , , Canon filed a new patent for  RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM and RF 300-800mm f/8 IS USM Lenses.

Canon patent application 2022-26392 (Japan) discusses optical formulas for 200-500mm f/4 and 300-800mm f/8 lenses. Check out the details below :

Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM Lens

This new Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM Lens wil be the successor to the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM 1.4x. And this RF 200-500mm is likely to be different in size because the telephoto end is 100mm longer than the EF version. With this, if a 1.4x telephoto lens is built in, the super-telephoto range is likely to become an extremely versatile lens that can handle most shooting with this one lens.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 206.00-485.01
  • F value: 4.09-4.10
  • Half angle of view: 6.00-2.55
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Overall length: 486.99
  • Back focus: 53.96

Example 3

  • Focal length: 154.55-585.00
  • F value: 5.10-6.51
  • Half angle of view: 7.97-2.12
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Overall length: 288.00-388.00
  • Back focus: 15.00-95.75

Example 4

  • Focal length: 205.00-390.00
  • F value: 4.10
  • Half angle of view: 6.02-3.18
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Overall length: 367.09
  • Back focus: 46.68

Example 5

  • Focal length: 305.00-774.99
  • F value: 8.09-8.10
  • Half angle of view: 4.06-1.60
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Overall length: 489.78
  • Back focus: 100.04

It seems that the inner zoom is realized with “100-500mm F4” and “300-800mm F8”. The total length looks pretty long, but it should Still, the total length is likely to be longer than the current “EF 200-400mm F4L IS USM Extender 1.4x” .

The image circle is supposed to be a 35mm full-frame sensor, and the back focus is long enough that there seems to be no problem with the EF mount. It is unclear which mount is assumed, RF or EF, but Example 3 is an optical system that is likely to be “150-600mm F4-6.3” for mirrorless cameras (only this optical system has a short back focus). Given that, it may be intended for use in RF systems.
